Public Transport
136 East 56 street is conveniently located practically at the crossroads of every kind of public transportation available. The subway entrance for the Nos. 4, 5 & 6 trains is three short blocks away on 59th Street and Lexington Avenue. In minutes, it can transport you directly to 42nd Street, Grand Central Terminal and just a few more minutes to the downtown area and Wall Street. Similarly, at 59th Street, you can catch the N, R and W trains to the west side and Times Square or downtown to City Hall and Wall Street area. Or take those trains out to Queens. A few blocks south on Lexington Avenue at 53rd street is the entrance to both the E and V (weekdays only) line trains that can take you to the west side, the Port Authority (E train) or out to Queens (E train to JFK air train). The M31 & M57 cross town buses on 57th Street and Lexington Avenue goes along 57th street and past Carnegie Hall travelling west and on to the West Side. The M31 can also take you east and then uptown along York Avenue to New York Hospital all the way up to Asphalt Green. Other buses conveniently located are the M101, M102 & M103 with a stop located right outside our building on Lexington Avenue for a ride downtown. And for return trips from downtown, you can take any local bus travelling up Madison or 3rd avenues and stop at 55th/56th street.
Points of Interest
Many houses of worship representing various denominations are located in the neighborhood, some with interesting architectural details or history, such as the Central Synagogue, Sutton Place Synagogue, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. Bartholomew's, Upper Midtown Chabad Lubavitch, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, just to name a few.
There are also a number of stores, banks and places of interest within walking distance. For example: MOMA, Central Park, Bloomingdale’s, Home Depot, FAO Schwartz, Tiffany’s, The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, SONY Wonder and numerous restaurants of various cuisines and prices.
Lastly, some practical information: the nearest Post Office is located on 3rd Avenue at 55th Street; the 17th Precinct Police Station is located at 167 East 51st Street (tel.: (212) 826-3211).
